Indeed, the whole premise of the story owes far too much to Lovecraft's Cthulhu concept, but without the bit that really counts - Lovecraft's "mechanistic materialism" emphasized man's ultimate cosmic insignificance, whereas Campbell's plot has the nameless menace relying absolutely on human agency for its work.
