Recognized as an important contribution to the archives of modern Malayan history Hembry's "Old School" attitude of not being an exceptional person but an ordinary one who lived in exceptional times comes through in his matter-of-fact style, which greatly underplays his work, the risks he took, and the sacrifices he made for the country he fell in love with.. What I like about this book is that it's the right mix of theory and practice. If you want to pass using REG book you are going to have to read it cover to cover twice and do all MC problems thrice and simulations thrice although there is no guarantee that the simulations will help you. Paper is glossy, but thin. De Waal is thoughtful and offers his opinions in a non forceful manner. It also gave me more confidence to work on my car.My advice is: buy this book to familiarize yourself with cars, and learn very basic car maintenance stuff such as changing your oil, checking your fluids, tires etc.For bigger projects like 'how to replace a water pump' (project 29), this is probably not the book you need.. From the Back CoverThe theoretical and empirical literature to date has fallen short of reaching a consensus as to whether granting more managerial discretion to managers tends to enhance, not alter or diminish organisational performance (the discretion puzzle). This generates far-reaching implications for theoretical and empirical research as well as practical recommendations for managing managers in multinationals and Chinese companies.. Using a representative sample of 'double-blind' interviews with managers of 467 firms in China and applying partial least squares path modelling (PLS), the study identifies a potential cause of the discretion puzzle: the failure of the extant literature to account for granularity in the way that managers use their discretion. This book aims to build a bridge between these contradictory results by synthesising principal-agent theory, stewardship theory, and managerial discretion theory into a new empirically-validated model
